Navneet Kapur, Professor of Psychiatry and Population Health at the University of Manchester and honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Mersey Care led this important research which looked at suicide risk in over 400 000 personnel who had left the UK Armed Forces over a 23 year period.
The retrospective study concluded that whilst the risk was not high, there were important differences according to age, with higher risk in young men and women. Improving and maintaining access to mental health care and social supports for young service leavers is important for suicide prevention, as well as implementing general suicide prevention measures for all veterans regardless of age.
