Working in partnership with Safehinge Primera, Mersey Care is about to pilot a new radar based patient safety technology in the Hope Centre, our drug and alcohol rehab facility in Liverpool. The technology uses non visual sensors to help keep service users safe in their rooms and can identify whether someone’s in a risky or vulnerable situation.

Should a service user be located behind a bedroom or bathroom door, for a specified amount of time, the technology will send an alert to a hand held device that a designated staff member will carry. Similar alerts will also be sent should a service user be on the floor, or if there is multiple occupancy in a bedroom or bathroom. The system aims to improve patient safety by enabling a swift response to a situation where a service user may be at harm or about to harm themselves.

The system doesn't use cameras and cannot identify individuals - protecting privacy and dignity, it measures tiny bits of information reflected from signals sent out by sensors located in bedrooms and bathrooms. All service users will be asked to consent to taking part in the pilot.
