Our team inside the prison worked with staff from the site on a successful range of events to mark the recent Mental Health Awareness Week. They were praised by prison leads as being “key players”.
Ten members of staff engaged with different areas of the establishment, encouraged meaningful conversations and identified where additional input may be needed. This proactive approach helped all staff better understand the challenges faced and how they can continue to provide effective support. Prison staff thanked our team for generously giving their time to successfully enhance engagement and future plans, as well as acknowledging the training work of Life Rooms there as well.
Events included a pop up breakfast MH awareness (full English) breakfast. This included the “Listeners”; a group of around 16 prisoners trained by the Samaritans to support men who may need help with their mental health before being referred to the integrated mental health team.
Our modern matron Luke Owens worked with people in the prison to explore ideas around in-cell activities that could positively support mental health, as well as other purposeful activities that could be introduced to encourage engagement and wellbeing.
Luke told us: “The week created real opportunities to connect with HMP Liverpool staff and prisoners in a meaningful way. It’s helped normalise conversations around mental health. The training has given staff practical tools and confidence to support people in crisis. I’d like to thank colleagues for how we all worked on the events.”
Following the week Luke says the team will look at using this event to develop training for the prison staff as this has been a key feature in many inspections.
Nice work team!
