In alignment with Mersey Care’s Perfect Care goals, Austen Ward has introduced monthly cultural themed weeks as part of their ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. This event celebrated Nigerian culture, recognising and honouring some of our service users, nine Nigerian staff and students who had joined our team in the last six months. Throughout the week, we hosted activities including:

  • Craft groups decorating the ward with Nigerian colours and symbols
  • Staff led sessions on Nigerian food, culture, music and fun facts
  • A final celebration featuring a buffet of traditional dishes, smoothies, dancing and shared experiences of multi ethnic staff working within the Trust.

The initiative was met with an overwhelmingly positive response, drawing participation from neighbouring wards, bank and agency colleagues, advocacy services and senior leadership team, including RRP Team. The themed week fostered a stronger sense of team cohesion and meaningfully contributed to breaking down cultural barriers - precisely delivering the impact intended.

Austen Ward remains committed to promoting diversity and inclusion through various initiatives, recognising the profound benefits this has on patient experience and staff wellbeing.
