The Mental Capactiy Act (MCA) team have updated the documentation that is required to be completed when conducting a ‘Mental Capacity Assessment’ on a patient. Following a mental capacity assessment and it has been found that the person does not have capacity to make a specific decision, staff must complete a ‘Best interest checklist’.

Staff completing the Best Interest Checklist must ensure that any decision made will be in the person’s best interest and in addition, must be the least restrictive from the options available.

Staff must consult with family, friends, anyone holding Lasting Power of Attorney, court appointed deputy and IMCA if appointed.

The clinical templates can be found within the ‘Mental Capacity Act’ folder on PACIS.

You can find further guidance on completing the MCA_Supportive_Tool.
