The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) relating to the Management and Recognition of the Deteriorating Patient – NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score RCP 2019) within the Community Care Division has now been uploaded on into the policies and procedures page on YourSpace.
All teams have the most up to date version of the EMIS NEWS2 auto calculator, staff can access and safely use this.
All teams can access Appendix 2 NEWS2 Recording Chart to print (see the attached PDF and in the appendix of the SOP) and store appropriately, in the event of business continuity (BCP).
All teams to be familiar with NEWS2 Escalation Score Flow Chart for Community Care Staff (see the attached PDF and in the appendix of the SOP) and it is recommended you print of copies of this to display is your team’s base (Telehealth, Urgent Treatment Centres and Walk-in Centres and Longmoor House , have sperate Escalation Charts in the Appendix).
All teams have access to sepsis screening tools on EMIS and are able to access these electronic and paper versions.
Training is in two parts and can be booked through section 1 of the prospectus.

Part A is open to all staff and provides a comprehensive overview to vital signs observations (manual blood pressure, manual pulse, tympanic temperature, SPO2, respiration rate and ACVPU conscious level), use of the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) track and trigger tool and appropriate and timely escalation of a deteriorating patient using the SBARD communication tool. There is a practical element opportunity to enhance manual clinical skills of observations under supervision.

Part B must only be completed once you've completed Part A. This course provides an assessment of competence in completing clinical observations including correct measurement of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, tympanic temperature, SPO2, respiration rate, ACVPU using NEWS2 score), awareness of optimal clinical parameters and escalation in clinical practice using SBARD communication tool.
