The Community Mental Health Transformation Team hosted a Peer Support Worker Day early in December. It was an inspiring and informative event, showcasing the vital role peer support workers (PSWs) play in recovery and patient care. The day brought together colleagues to share insights, discuss best practice and strengthen understanding of how lived experience enriches our services.
Helena Keeley, Head of Nursing in community mental health and the transformation team, outlined the background of peer support, emphasising the positive impact on recovery through relationship building and shared experiences. Ann Taylor and Ed Kelly, Senior Peer Support/Lived Experience Workers, provided an in depth look at the rationale behind the peer support programme, its recruitment journey and the transformative role PSWs play in bridging care gaps. Teams collaborated on defining bespoke workplans for PSWs tailored to their needs, while maintaining a unified approach across services.
Our newly recruited PSWs joined us for a day of connection and collaboration, marking the beginning of their journey with us. They have already started building strong working relationships with their teams, bringing enthusiasm, empathy and a wealth of lived experience to their roles. Their contributions are set to make a significant impact on patient care and team dynamics and we’re excited to see how their unique perspectives will continue to enrich our services.
We’re introducing additional training and preparation to support the transition of our new PSWs with bespoke HR27 training sessions to address the unique aspects of the PSW programme, equipping managers and teams with essential knowledge and tools. Meanwhile, Ann and Ed are working closely with teams through readiness meetings and tailored guidance to deepen understanding of the PSW role and ensure smooth integration into daily operations. These initiatives aim to create a safe and welcoming environment for PSWs, ensuring their successful arrival in the new year.
Welcome aboard to our incredible new peer support workers!
