On 13 December, Antonia Bennett, care practitioner based in Norris Green District Nursing Team, attended a routine patient visit and immediately detected the smell of gas upon entering the property. The patient, elderly and vulnerable, was reluctant to leave her home, but Antonia insisted on her safety and advised her to exit. She promptly contacted the Emergency Gas Service. Upon arrival, an engineer discovered a gas leak from a recent external repair, which was seeping into the home.

The patient later revealed that had she turned on her cooker, a gas explosion could have occurred. Antonia’s quick thinking not only safeguarded the patient but also protected the surrounding community from a potential disaster. Her swift response highlights the vital role healthcare professionals play in ensuring patient safety beyond medical care.
