Austen Ward held another of its monthly, culturally themed events. This one was in honour of a service user from Kurdistan who was being discharged - to celebrate his journey with his mental health and his family members being supported to be a part of his journey. All service users’ family members were invited. Austen Ward also relaunched the multi-purpose room which promotes equality and diversity, allowing services users access to practice their religion and culture whilst on the ward. During the week, there was also a range of groups, including an Imam, who hosted an educational group on Islam, a service user being supported to talk about the Kurdish culture, what this entails, including dress code, food and music.

The week ended with the celebration. Kurdistan flags adorned the corridor and dining room where service users, family members and staff enjoyed traditional food and music and dressed in traditional clothing. Austen Ward staff pride themselves on promoting equality and diversity, recognising the importance to the service user and carer experience. The events are the idea of service users, who always invite family and loved ones and have so far included Nigeria, Greece and India - the next one is being planned.
