This week and for the second year running, Liverpool John Moores University School of Nursing and Advance Practice held its first of four bespoke workshops on Advanced Care Planning (ACP), for community matrons and specialist nurses in collaboration with Mersey Care.

Led by Geraldine Macdonald Smith, Dr Julie-Ann Hayes, Alison Dean and Alison White, the delegates were introduced to principles of advanced care planning. This included its legal aspects and ACP considerations for persons with an intellectual disability.

The team also introduced Dr Karen Higginbotham who discussed ACP in cardiac co-morbidities and heart failure. It was an excellent day of thought provoking discussion, sharing experiences and best practice.

The session culminated in a lively mock multidisciplinary team meeting. This gave the delegates experience of the roles, responsibilities and awareness that team members crucially play in ACP planning and how to ensure patient and family centred approaches are front and centre of such discussions.

Thank you to all the delegates for your outstanding contribution and participation. Looking forward to welcoming our next 10 delegates for the session next week!
