Our new site at Mossley Hill has been shortlisted for this year’s prestigious Design in Mental Health Awards.
The 80 bed newbuild, which replaced the ageing mix of mid twentieth century buildings previously on Park Avenue, opened to patients in November.
Architects Gilling Dod realised the Trust’s need for a state of the art site with airy therapeutic facilities, garden spaces and a design which fitted into the local environment.
The Design in Mental Health Awards are among the most prestigious recognitions for the design and build community in mental healthcare. They highlight innovation, user-centred approaches and evidence-based design that improves mental health outcomes. The awards are open to individuals and organisations from the public, private and third sectors, and include both NHS and independent mental health providers.

The new Mossley Hill has wards named after a diverse range of local figures:
- Braddock Ward, after local politician and social reformer Bessie Braddock
- Wilkinson Ward, after the local public health pioneer Kitty Wilkinson
- Archer Ward, after one of the UK's first black mayors, locally born John Archer
- Roscoe Ward, after the local anti-slavery campaigner William Roscoe
- The Crawford Suite, for the 136 suite, named after the original local landowner.
Display boards around the site explain the history and how those names came to be chosen.
Today the new facility is home to inpatient mental health as well as the chaplains, the MH Law Team, Health and Wellbeing and also the Urgent Care/Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team.
Back when Mossley Hill opened, our Chief Nurse Jenny Hurst said: ‘This new facility will enable all staff to work in an environment beneficial to our patients and for you to provide the care that you all want to deliver.”
The Design in Mental Health award winners will be announced at an event in early June. Good luck to the Mossley Hill team!
