What inspired you to follow your current career path?
I joined the Medicines Management team in 2021, having worked within the NHS for more than 22 years in a variety of roles. My previous experience includes working as a GP receptionist, a Single Point of Access clerical worker within mental health services, and as the first point of contact for the Crisis and Home Treatment Team, where I was responsible for arranging Section 365 assessments.
I later spent approximately 12 years within the Pharmacy Department at Arrowe Park Hospital, where I completed my BTEC and NVQ Level 2 in Pharmaceutical Science. During this time, I gained extensive experience in dispensary, stores, and ward-based settings as part of their Medicines Management team.
When looking for a role that would combine my skills while offering improved work–life balance for my young family, I felt drawn back to mental health services. I had always valued the opportunity to support individuals during vulnerable moments, and I was eager to contribute more directly to patient care. This led me to apply for the Medicines Management Support Worker role at Mersey Care, where I was delighted to be successful.
What is the best thing about being part of the Mersey Care family?
What I value most about working for Mersey Care is our shared purpose: we are all here to help. The greatest reward for me is seeing patients progress on their recovery journey and begin to feel like themselves again, supported by the services our Trust provides. Working in pharmacy has deepened my understanding of mental health and the treatments available, and it has opened my eyes to how many people in our community may be struggling silently. The stigma surrounding mental health can make individuals hesitant to seek support, but increased awareness shows that anyone can experience difficulties — and help is available.
Areas I've worked in
My role has given me the opportunity to work across secure and non-secure wards as well as community-based centres. I currently work within the Replenishment Team, providing a top-up service and, more recently, contributing to a near-patient dispensing service to improve the efficiency of discharge medication. I am also responsible for ordering non-stock medications to ensure patients always have the supplies they need. I enjoy being a friendly, familiar presence on the wards and taking the time to check in with patients about their day.
Medicines Management is a large and diverse team, and it is the combination of our roles that allows us to deliver the high standard of care our patients deserve.
What do you like to do when you're not working?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time at home with my children, crafting or baking. Baking is a form of relaxation for me, and sharing what I make with family and friends brings me joy. I find it especially helpful during times of stress or anxiety — a reminder that we all benefit from positive coping mechanisms.
I hope my experience encourages others to consider joining us at Mersey Care Medicines Management, where we support our patients — and each other.
