Marbury Ward in Rowan View recently won the Team of the Month award for continuous improvement. The medium secure unit has had a run of really positive news and this week Chief Executive Trish Bennett visited the high dependency ward there to meet Marbury staff.

The Trust’s Team of the Month is a prestigious recognition of how our organisation's values are seen to make a significant difference to patients. The judges also look at where teams are also making a positive difference to their own service, team or colleagues.

Sarah Pilling, Head of Operations at the MSU, was proud to introduce Marbury staff to Trish on Monday. Sarah thanked them for their work against multiple challenges. The ward receives many complex admissions and must create individualised plans for each service user. The team are known for going above and beyond and have seen excellent outcomes including strong patient recoveries especially whilst the ward has been experiencing high acuity.

Trish Bennett presented the team with their certificate and vouchers. She said how welcoming, positive and clean the ward was.

As part of the award submission, one remark from a service user really stood out. This man has been on Marbury for six months and wrote to the team, naming particular colleagues for the individualised care they have given him in support of his recovery:

“Thank you for treating me like a human. You are the best nurse I have ever met, you understand and stay boundaried at the same time."

The patient said that staff were good at identifying his times of need and never complained: “Thank you for being understanding”, he added.

Sarah Pilling said that she is impressed with the team's ability to develop some really positive therapeutic relationships with patients. She said: “Marbury have some great communication techniques, very individualised care plans and they remain objective and patient-focussed even in the most challenging situations.”

Leaders noted that Esther Wood and her team have worked hard to induct many new starters in the best procedures of patient safety and relational security.

Sarah also noted: “The team have welcomed new colleagues and a thorough induction means that patient safety and relational security remain robust. Training figures are consistently strong. The culture of staff support, resilience and psychological safety they have built is inspiring. The leadership within the team sets a high standard - fostering open, compassionate conversation and truly embodying the Trust’s values. On top of all this, Marbury’s commitment to quality improvement and staff development continues to make a positive impact on the ward.”

Very well done team...and thank you!
