World Hepatitis Day – 28 July 2026

On 28 July, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust joins organisations across the globe in marking World Hepatitis Day, raising awareness of viral hepatitis and reinforcing our commitment to prevention, early diagnosis, and equitable care.

Viral hepatitis remains a significant global and national public health challenge, with many individuals living with hepatitis B or C without knowing it. Left untreated, hepatitis can lead to serious liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, with early testing, effective treatments, and vaccination for hepatitis B, hepatitis is both preventable and treatable.

At Mersey Care, we are dedicated to supporting our communities through proactive outreach, education, and integrated care pathways.

This year’s World Hepatitis Day is a reminder that:

  • Testing saves lives – many people have no symptoms, so early screening is essential
  • Treatment is highly effective, particularly for hepatitis C, which can now often be cured
  • Vaccination protects against hepatitis B
  • Reducing stigma and improving awareness are key to encouraging people to seek help.

Our teams across infection prevention, community health and specialist services continue to play a vital role in identifying risk, promoting safer practices, and ensuring people receive the care and support they need. Through education and engagement, we empower both staff and service users to take action in preventing transmission and improving outcomes.

To support this year’s campaign, the Infection Prevention and Control team will be hosting promotional awareness stands at the following sites:

  • Clock View 10am to 12pm
  • Mossley Hill 1pm to 3pm
  • Whiston Resource Centre 10am to 11am

Colleagues and service users are encouraged to visit the stands to learn more about hepatitis prevention, testing and treatment, and to speak with the team.

The IPC team will also be delivering a bespoke IPC training session to Sefton Phlebotomy Service. The session will start at 8am and be delivered on Teams.

How you can support World Hepatitis Day:

  • Promote awareness among colleagues, patients, and communities
  • Encourage testing for those at risk
  • Support a stigma free environment, where people feel safe to seek care
  • Stay informed about best practice in infection prevention and management.
