We've been informed by DT Hughes, sub-contracting for Scottish Power, that essential electrical cabling works will be undertaken on Queens Drive and Thomas Drive, involving lane closures and traffic controls outside Liverpool Heart and Chest and Broadgreen Hospitals and the Broadoak Unit. These extensive works will be carried out in a staged way, beginning on Wednesday, 23 July. They are expected to be completed by Wednesday, 5 November. During this period, travel disruption in the surrounding area of the hospital site is inevitable with delays and queuing traffic anticipated.

Emergency planning, estates, nursing and other operational teams from Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and Mersey Care, have been working closely with contractors to ensure that disruption is minimised as far as possible and to ensure that appropriate arrangements are put in place for blue light emergency access, patient access and for staff and visitor movement to and from the hospital site.

Key phases of work

Road crossing at Queens Drive

  • Start date: 23 July 2025
  • Duration: Up to 5 days
  • Traffic impact: Reduction to one lane in each direction over the Rocket flyover and the M62 slip road to turn right onto Queens Drive will also be narrowed to a single lane.

Central reservation and lane work

  • Estimated start: w/c 28 July 2025
  • Duration: Approximately 7 days
  • Traffic impact: Continued single lane running in both directions. Queens Drive gate into the hospital site will be restricted to entrance only – there will be no way for vehicles to exit the hospital site directly onto Queens Drive. Vehicles should exit the site via Thomas Drive. Access to the hospital site and the multi-storey car park from Thomas Drive will be unaffected.

Work along Thomas Drive

  • Provisional start date: 13 August 2025
  • Duration: Expected until 30 September 2025
  • Traffic impact: One lane to remain open in each direction throughout. Parking restrictions will apply, where necessary, to facilitate safety zones but no full road closure is expected.

Following the completion of Phase 3, the scheme will continue through residential areas towards Rocky Lane. The entire project is scheduled to conclude by 5 November 2025.

Considerations:

  • Where possible, ensure service users allow extra journey time when attending appointments on site
  • Please ensure visiting relatives are aware of the travel disruption in advance
  • All staff should plan travel in advance and allow extra time for journeys to and from the site
  • Staff may wish to consider alternative travel – walk, cycle, scooter etc.
  • To date, no public transport timetable changes or planned route changes have been shared
  • No planned power outages are expected at any stage during these works.

We will keep you updated on any changes.
