An important update from Jenny Hurst, Chief Nurse and Martin Jones, Assistant Director of Nursing Infection Prevention and Control:
Flu hospitalisations have surged by more than half in just one week with no peak in sight, new figures reveal.
An average of 2,660 patients per day were in a hospital bed with flu last week – the highest ever for this time of year and up 55% up on last week.
It means there are enough flu patients each day to fill more than three whole hospital trusts.
Add to this an impending resident doctor’s strike (17 to 22 December) and this unprecedented wave of super flu is leaving the NHS facing a worst case scenario for this time of year – with staff being pushed to the limit to keep providing the best possible care for patients.
Mersey Care is seeing similar pressures; Chief Nurse Jenny Hurst shared this message:
“We’re seeing unprecedented pressures this winter, with flu hospitalisations at record levels and outbreaks affecting several of our wards. Now more than ever, it’s vital that every member of staff protects themselves, their families, and our patients by getting the flu vaccine. It’s quick, easy, and free - and by taking this simple step, you’re helping us keep our teams safe and ensure we can provide the best care for our patients. Please book your jab or visit one of our clinics as soon as possible.”
Our Infection Prevention and Control lead, Martin Jones added:
“Our staff vaccination rate is low, and sickness rates are high. Vaccination is the best protection for you and those around you - even healthy people need the jab, because flu is not just a bad cold. If you’re struggling to access the vaccine, reach out and we’ll help. Let’s work together to keep our teams safe this winter.”
Getting your flu jab is quick, easy, and free for all staff - book online or visit one of our clinics. Roaming vaccinators are available for teams who can’t get to a clinic. If you’re struggling to access the jab, email vaccinations
Remember:
- Vaccination is the best protection for you and those around you
- Even healthy people need the jab - flu is not just a bad cold
- You cannot get flu from the vaccine
- If you’re feeling unwell, stay home and avoid contact with others.
Let’s work together to keep our teams safe and ensure we can provide the best care for our patients this winter.
