UKHSA has reported an increase in measles across the country and is encouraging people to check that they and their children have had two doses of the MMR vaccine.
The upcoming travel season could trigger a new surge in cases, as families visit countries experiencing their own measles outbreaks. This comes amid a significant global increase, with European cases already double the number reported last year – the highest since 1997.
Parents are urged to check their children's vaccination records as it's never too late to catch up on missed vaccinations. Measles is a severe and highly contagious viral illness, which is on the rise due to less people having the MMR vaccine.
UKHSA has produced a poster for health professionals to help them identify measles, what to do if they suspect measles and ensuring staff are fully vaccinated.
Anyone with symptoms is also being advised to stay at home and phone their GP or NHS 111 for advice.
Measles symptoms to be aware of include:
- high fever
- sore, red, watery eyes
- coughing
- aching and feeling generally unwell
- a blotchy red brown rash, which usually appears after the initial symptoms.
If you are unsure of your current measles status, you can contact Occupational Health on 01925 664010 or email OHWB
The Occupational Health team has been undertaking a measles recall programme over the last two years, checking staff status and offering MMR vaccination or serology to ensure staff are protected against the disease, in turn protecting family members and patients.
