A number of diversions, road closures and traffic management measures will be in place throughout the Grand National festival three days  from Thursday, 7 April to Saturday.

  • Those not attending the festival are advised to avoid the A59 Ormskirk Road from Switch Island through to the Black Bull junction.
  • Ormskirk Road, as well as Park Lane between Bridle Road and Ormskirk Road, will be closed between 4pm and 9pm on all three festival days. Heavy traffic is expected on the A59 from 10am – 2pm.
  • During the closure, traffic will be diverted via Switch Island, Dunnings Bridge Road, Netherton Way and Southport Road.

Merseyrail and Merseytravel

Merseyrail

During the Thursday - 7 April, Friday - 8 April and Saturday 9 April which is when the racing will take place, there will be a 10 minute frequency service between the city centre and Aintree stations on the Merseyrail Northern Line.

On Thursday 7 April and Friday 8 April, Merseyrail will run 10-minute services between approximately 10.30am to 1.50pm and 4.45pm to 8.25pm.

On Saturday 9 April the 10-minute service will run from approximately10.30am to 1.50pm and 5.35pm to 9pm. There will also be timetable changes for other services to accommodate the increased number of services for racegoers.

Northern Rail are also planning to operate additional services, passengers should regularly check the Northern website for further details.

Ormskirk Line

  • Trains will run between Liverpool city centre stations and Aintree every 10 minutes before and after the races
  • Trains from Ormskirk to Liverpool will depart all stations up to two minutes earlier than usual

Southport Line

  • Trains from Southport to Liverpool will depart all stations up to two minutes earlier than usual

Kirkby Line

  • Between 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm, all Kirkby line services will start and terminate at Sandhills station. Kirkby line passengers travelling towards Liverpool should alight at Sandhills and board any train to Liverpool. Passengers travelling towards Kirkby, should board any train to Southport or Ormskirk from Liverpool Central or Moorfields and change at Sandhills for trains to Kirkby

Wirral Lines

  • There are no changes to Wirral line services. If you are travelling from Wirral to the races, we recommend changing onto a train for Aintree at Moorfields station

Merseytravel

There will be bus services running regularly between Queen Square bus station and Aintree.

On Friday 8 April and Saturday 9 April  Arriva and Stagecoach will be running shuttle bus services between Commutation Row in the city centre and Deltic Way in Aintree.

Various Road closures on Wednesday 6 April through to Saturday 9 April 2022 will be in operation due to the Grand National Festival taking place.

Bus diversions are as follows: 

Route 63: (4pm to 10pm  Thursday/Friday and  5pm to 10pm Saturday)

  • From Bootle as normal route to Park Lane then via Bridle Road, Netherton Way, Bailey Drive, Southport Road, Hornby Road, Rice Lane, Walton Vale, Longmoor Lane then resume normal route to Aintree Hospital. (Omits Park Lane & Warbreck Moor).
  • From Aintree Hospital as normal to Longmoor Lane then via Walton Vale, Rice Lane, Hornby Road, Southport Road, Bailey Drive, Netherton Way, Bridle Road, Park Lane then resume normal route to Bootle. (Omits Hall Lane, Warbreck Moor and Park Lane).

Route 121: (All journeys from Wednesday, 6th April up to and including Saturday 9 April)

  • From Broadway as normal route to Hall Lane then left onto Warbreck Moor to terminate at Warbreck Moor (omits part of Warbreck Moor, Ormskirk Road & Aintree Station)
  • From Warbreck Moor then as normal route to Broadway (omits Aintree Station, Ormskirk Road & part of Warbreck Moor)

Route 135: (Wednesday/Thursday/Friday and Saturday)

  • Journeys should commence from Longmoor Lane/Elmham Crescent and operate via Longmoor Lane then as normal route to Bootle (omits Aintree Station, Ormskirk Road, Warbreck Moor, Melling Road & Seeds Lane)
  • From Bootle as normal route to Longmoor Lane then continue along Longmoor Lane to terminate at Elmham Crescent (omits Seeds Lane, Melling Road, Warbreck Moor, Ormskirk Road & Aintree Station)

Route 214: (All journeys Thursday/Friday/Saturday)

  • From Lavender Way as normal route to Longmoor Lane then continue along Longmoor Lane to Walton Vale then resume normal route to Cavendish Drive (omits Seeds Lane, Melling Road & Warbreck Moor)
  • From Cavendish Drive as normal to Walton Vale then Longmoor Lane, continuing normal route to Lavender Way (omits Warbreck Moor, Melling Road and Seeds Lane)

Route 300: (4pm to 10pm Thursday/Friday and 5pm to 10pm Saturday)

  • From Liverpool City Centre as normal to Aintree Road then via Southport Road, Bailey Drive, Netherton Way, Bridle Road, Park Lane, Dunnings Bridge Road to Switch Island then resume normal route to Lydiate/Southport (omits Hornby Road, Rice Lane, Walton Vale, Warbreck Moor & Ormskirk Road)
  • From Southport/Lydiate as normal route to Switch Island then via Dunnings Bridge Road, Park Lane, Bridle Road, Netherton Way, Bailey Drive, Southport Road, Aintree Road then resume normal route to Liverpool City Centre (omits Ormskirk Road, Warbreck Moor, Walton Vale, Rice Lane & Hornby Road)

Route 310: (From Thursday 7 April until Saturday 9 April)

  • From Liverpool City Centre as normal to Rice Lane then via Hornby Road, Southport Road, Bailey Drive, Netherton Way, Bridle Road, Park Lane, Dunnings Bridge Road to Switch Island then resume normal route to Maghull/Skelmersdale (omits part of Rice Lane, Walton Vale, Warbreck Moor & Ormskirk Road)
  • From Skelmersdale/Maghull as normal route to Switch Island then via Dunnings Bridge Road, Park Lane, Bridle Road, Netherton Way, Bailey Drive, Southport Road, Hornby Road, Rice Lane then resume normal route to Liverpool City Centre (omits Ormskirk Road, Warbreck Moor, Walton Vale, part of Rice Lane)

Route 345: (4pm –last bus Thursday/Friday and 5pm-last bus Sat)

  • From Liverpool City Centre as normal to Walton Vale then via Longmoor Lane, Aintree Lane, Wango Lane, Bull Bridge Lane then resume normal route Waddicar (omits Warbreck Moor, Ormskirk Road, Aintree Lane & Altway)
  • From Waddicar as normal to Bull Bridge Lane, then via Bull Bridge Lane, Wango Lane, Aintree Lane, Longmoor Lane, Walton Vale, then resume normal route to Liverpool City Centre (omits Altway, Aintree Lane, Ormskirk Road & Warbreck Moor)
