We’ve recently been notified that some Mersey Care staff are not adhering to the Bare Below Elbow (BBE) Guidance and the Uniform and Workwear Policy when working in or visiting acute trusts. Unfortunately, this continues to be a significant issue within our own buildings too, across all bandings and clinical roles.
As we approach the festive season, we often see an increase in painted nails, acrylic nails and other non-compliant practices. While we understand the excitement of party season, it’s essential to remember that infection prevention and control starts with us.
What does BBE mean?
BBE requires that anyone in clinical uniform must have:
No wrist watches or jewellery (except a plain wedding band)
- No long sleeves – arms must be bare below the elbow
- No false nails, nail polish or acrylics.
These measures are in place to protect our patients and colleagues by reducing the risk of infection.
Compliance is not optional – it’s a professional responsibility.
Please take a moment to review the full guidance here.
Let’s work together to ensure that EVERYONE in clinical uniform is BBE compliant – whether you’re in our buildings or visiting acute trusts. Thank you for helping us maintain the highest standards of care.
