Flu vaccination: Protecting patients, protecting each other – a call to action for our clinical staff

As we move deeper into the winter season, I want to speak directly to all staff - particularly those in clinical and patient-facing roles - about the steep rise in flu cases and the critical role each of us plays in protecting our patients, our colleagues, and ourselves.

Flu cases are rising sharply

Across the North West and nationally, flu activity is increasing faster and earlier than usual. In England, flu deaths more than doubled last year - from 3,555 to 7,757 - and child deaths rose by 56%. Hospital admissions are surging, with over 3,000 beds now occupied by flu patients - 360% higher than this time last year. Locally, Liverpool and surrounding areas are seeing a week-on-week rise in Influenza A cases, with early outbreaks already affecting inpatient wards.

Vaccination is our best defence

From an infection prevention and control perspective, vaccination is key. It’s not just about personal protection - it’s about professional responsibility.

We recommend that all colleagues who deliver direct patient care – including students on placement – are vaccinated to reduce the risk of contracting flu and spreading infection. Healthcare workers have a responsibility to protect their patients. For nurses, this is enshrined in the NMC Code.

Yet uptake remains worryingly low. As of this week, only 30% of frontline staff at Mersey Care are vaccinated, with some divisions reporting even lower figures. Nationally, uptake among NHS Trust staff has dropped to 37.5%, the lowest in over a decade.

Why hesitate?

I ask each of you to reflect on your training and your values. Why would we knowingly put people at risk - especially those who trust us with their care - when we have the tools to prevent harm?

If you’ve chosen not to get vaccinated, please consider your reasons. Is it access? Misinformation? Needle phobia? We’re here to help.

We’ve introduced:

•         Roaming clinics to reach secure and mental health settings

•         Bespoke clinics for teams of six or more

•         Support for needle phobia, including psychological services

•         Prize draw for vaccinated staff

•         Plus a dedicated vaccination area on YourSpace with FAQs and more.

How to get vaccinated

Clinics are running across Maghull Health Park, V7, Hollins Park and other sites. Walk-ins and bookable appointments are available. If you have had the vaccine outside of the Trust, for example GP or local pharmacy, and you wish to be entered into the prize draw, please complete this form.
