Legs Matter Awareness Week is a national campaign highlighting the importance of good lower limb care. Across the UK, too many people are still experiencing avoidable pain, delayed healing, repeated appointments, inconsistent treatment, and life-changing complications linked to lower limb conditions. But better care is possible because it doesn’t have to be this way.
This year’s theme focuses on the gap between what we know works and what patients actually experience.
We know that:
- Poor lower limb care can lead to avoidable pain, harm and hospital admissions
- Evidence-based care can dramatically improve outcomes
- Yet too many patients still experience delayed assessment, inconsistent treatment, or missed opportunities for prevention
The good news is that better care is already happening — and we can all play a role in spreading best practice.
Get involved this week
We’re encouraging colleagues to take part in two learning opportunities during the week:
Live Q&A with our Tissue Viability Nurses
Thursday 11 June, 10am to 12pm
An opportunity to ask questions, share challenges and learn from specialists, while building confidence in lower limb care. Open to all nursing roles – Join here.
Lunch and Learn webinar with the Royal College of Nursing
Thursday 11 June, 12pm to 1pm
A focused session on Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and lower limb management, featuring Annie Clothier, Vascular Clinical Nurse Specialist. Open to all nursing roles – Join here.
What we’re asking staff to do:
- Look out for early signs: swelling, skin changes, wounds or discomfort
- Act quickly: refer or escalate concerns promptly
- Follow best practice
- Take part in learning opportunities during the week
Why it matters:
Every contact counts. By improving lower limb care, we can:
- Reduce patient harm and discomfort
- Prevent unnecessary admissions
- Support people to live well in their communities
Let’s work together to close the gap between knowledge and care.
