Staying safe: Domestic violence over the Christmas period

Sadly, the Christmas period typically sees a rise in police responses to domestic abuse incidents.

Why does domestic abuse increase at Christmas?

  • Financial pressures: Christmas often brings added strain. The pressure to provide presents, food, and create a perfect holiday can amplify stress and tensions in households already on edge.
  • More Time at Home: With time off work and school, victims are often trapped in prolonged contact with their abuser, leaving little room for escape or breathing space.
  • Alcohol and Substance Use: Alcohol consumption tends to spike during Christmas festivities. For some, this exacerbates abusive and controlling behaviours.
  • Isolation from Support Networks: Services might operate reduced hours. Friends, family, and colleagues may be less available. Victims can feel more alone than ever, struggling to reach out for help.
  • Expectations of “Happiness”: The overwhelming societal narrative of ‘happy families’ can silence victims, making them feel ashamed to admit their reality or seek help.
