This document provides Trust staff working on wards with guidance about the use of Rapid Tranquillisation. It determines the main provisions of appropriate use of Rapid Tranquillisation, use of associated medication and the roles and responsibilities of staff. It enables a consistent approach to the use of Rapid Tranquillisation and ensures that patients are kept safe and informed and are treated with dignity and respect.

Restrictive interventions are ways staff may intervene in crisis situations to prevent harm e.g. physical restraint, seclusion, long term segregation, supportive observations, rapid tranquilisation.
