We are in the process of developing and rolling out a bespoke, Trust wide preceptorship programme for all newly qualified nurses and allied health professionals (AHPs).

The 12 month supported learning programme will provide all newly qualified clinicians with a designated preceptor, who will support their development as they enter their first year of practice as a qualified clinician.

Preceptees will benefit from a bespoke training and support package to help them make the transition from student to qualified clinican, including a structured learning programme with protected time allocated to further develop their practice.

Who is the programme for?

The preceptorship programme will be available for all newly-qualified nursing and AHP staff. This includes:

  • Adults’ nurses
  • Children’s nurses
  • Mental health nurses
  • Learning disability nurses
  • Health visitors
  • Nurse associates
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Podiatrists
  • Speech and language therapists
  • Dietitians

When does the new preceptorship programme start?

There will be four Trust wide preceptorship cohorts each year, with the first beginning on 29 September 2021 and the next cohorts following in January, March and June 2022. All newly-qualified staff starting in post between 1 August and 29 September will be invited to join the September 2021 cohort.

If you are a newly qualified staff member who has started in post after 1 August 2021, we will be in touch by the end of August. If you haven’t heard anything by this date, please contact Nichola Thomason, Preceptorship Development Lead at nichola.thomason@merseycare.nhs.uk

Is there any training available for preceptors/supervisors?

To support the rollout of the programme, we are holding a series of training sessions for preceptors/supervisors during August and September. The full-day sessions will equip attendees with the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful preceptor and effectively support your preceptee. If you are interested in booking onto one of these sessions or to enquire about dates, please contact Nichola Thomason at nichola.thomason@merseycare.nhs.uk

Will the preceptorship paperwork change?

In September we will be launching new preceptorship paperwork. If you are currently in post and have already begun your preceptorship, please continue to use the existing paperwork. This will be copied over for you after the new paperwork has been launched to avoid any duplication.

Who can I contact for more information?

If you have any questions or queries about the preceptorship programme, please contact Nichola Thomason at nichola.thomason@merseycare.nhs.uk
