NHS Cheshire and Merseyside is responsible for the delivery of Medicines Optimisation (MO) in primary care in our area, working in collaboration with hospital teams.

Place-based Medicines Management Teams facilitate the safe and cost-effective use of medicines within these care settings.

NHS Cheshire and Merseyside undertook a review of commissioning arrangements for Medicines Optimisation services that had carried forward from its predecessor clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), with the aim of developing a new and more appropriate delivery model.

A review of all commissioned MO services was undertaken which concluded in the recommendation and subsequent approval of moving all commissioned medicines optimisation services into NHS Cheshire and Merseyside. The decision supports the delivery of key objectives in relation to cost savings, innovative ways of working, workforce development and retention, quality and safety improvement in relation to prescribing, support to general practice and system working.

Following consultation, the employment of 81 Medicines Optimisation staff will transfer to NHS Cheshire and Merseyside with effect from 1 April 2024. A total of 16 staff will join from the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 47 from Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, and 18 from Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit.

Staff transferring from partner organisations will work to support Place teams to deliver consistent and efficient Medicines Optimisation services across Cheshire and Merseyside.
