The listening session will take place on:

Anti-Racism

Over the last two years, as the world has confronted dual pandemics of COVID-19 and racism, Individuals and institutions have been forced to think critically about the role they play - either upholding racist systems, or intentionally adopting anti-racist practice.

Anti-racism is an active and ongoing process, which requires us to re-examine our work in the world, how we interact with one another, and our own assumptions, beliefs, and behaviour. Our belief is that everyone should play a role in this critical re-examination.

In July 2021 the trust introduced an audacious goal - to work towards zero acceptance of racism, discrimination, and disrespectful behaviours. The trust has approached brap (an equalities and human rights charity) to help the organisation to drive forward this ambition.

Our intention for this session

The aim of the listening session is to create a confidential space to hear from and listen to Black, Asian and Minoritized staff members of staff. This is to help support the trust with the ambition of zero acceptance of racism.

What to expect during the session

We would like your support in creating a confidential space where people can speak honestly and openly about their experiences

Exploring issues around ‘race’ and racism can be uncomfortable and cause us to confront ourselves and our understanding; we seek to hold a space within which discomfort and learning can coexist, and we recognise that the learning journey is never complete for any of us. Please do what you need to take care of yourself during and after the session and enable you to be fully present.

A word on technology

Our sessions are interactive so for an optimal experience, please:

  • We would like to be able to interact with you as much as possible, so would invite you to use a camera (and keep it switched on – unless there are technical difficulties)
  • ensure your display name allows us to easily identify you in the ‘waiting room’
  • log off and log back in to resolve any technical difficulty (it often does the trick!).

Should there be any issues that might inhibit your participation in the session, please let us know so that we can try to make adjustments for you.

About brap

brap is a charity transforming the way we think and do equality. We are not newcomers to this work and have been around for 23 years.  We were established to be an independent, transformative force in the equalities sector. For more information, please go to: www.brap.org.uk

We recognise we need to be courageous in our approach to addressing inequality. Our response to these issues can’t be formulaic because equality deals with people. We draw from a range of disciplines, including sociology, psychology, organisational development, power dynamics and deep democracy as ways of understanding and delivering within the complexity that our partners face.

brap works to effect sustainable change. We stand firm in our belief that much of what is done in the name of equality doesn’t really make the difference we want it to make. Our approach therefore is one of learning and collaboration.
