This procedure has been developed to ensure the effective and safe management of adult patients who are admitted to a Trust inpatient unit with opioid dependence.

A person may be detained for up to 36 hours in Health Based Places of Safety (HBPoS). During this time, the person may require medication that is critical to their health. The guidance in this procedure will ensure that a ‘Required Medicines Review’ be carried out for all persons detained under section 135/136 of the Mental Health Act. It will support Trust staff with processes relating to medicines reconciliation, assessment and review, prescribing, ordering, supply and administration of ‘Time Critical Medicines’.

The benefits and contribution that assistance dogs, therapy and pet animals offer in enhancing the quality of life and care experience is well documented, especially in mental health. In certain circumstances, animal visits to ward and clinical areas may be allowed if a thorough risk assessment has been undertaken and any identified risks are managed appropriately, as such visits have been shown to have numerous psychological and physical benefits which may outweigh the infection control issues.

The Discharge Medicines Service enables NHS Trusts to send referrals direct to the nominated community pharmacy of patients who are eligible and would benefit from extra guidance around newly prescribed medicines, including a copy of the patient's discharge prescription, aiming to reduce re-admissions to hospital. The automated referral process and eligibility are determined in this SOP.

The aim of the process outlined in this document is that all members of the Board of Directors, the Executive Team and their Direct Reports have been subject to relevant the Fit and Proper Persons Test on an annual basis.
