Part A: Course Information: This course provides a comprehensive overview to vital signs observations (manual blood pressure, manual pulse, tympanic temperature, SPO2, respiration rate and ACVPU conscious level), use of the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) track and trigger tool and appropriate and timely escalation of a deteriorating patient using the SBARD communication tool. Practical element opportunity to enhance manual clinical skills of observations under supervision. Target Audience: It is provided for any staff member who must develop competence in the assessment and recognition of deteriorating physical health of the service user. Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of improving safety and quality of person-centred care. 2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the assessment, interpretation and recognition of the deteriorating patient using vital sign observations and the National Early Warning Score 2. 3. Escalate timely and appropriately in clinical practice using the SBARD Communication Tool. 4. Have Sepsis awareness. 5. Care Certificate Course Information: Mersey Care has given the commitment that identified support staff, Band 2-4, will have the opportunity to complete the Care Certificate training. The uptake of the Care Certificate will directly impact upon our patient experience and contribute to our vision of “Our vision is to lead the way in whole-person, life-long care that helps people live happier, healthier lives”. In addition staff will have a more in-depth understanding of care and the competencies required to care for patients in Health and Social Care. This course will give staff the basis from which they can further develop and maximise their potential and progress in their career. Target Audience: Newly appointed B2-4 Health Care Support Workers completely new to working in health care. SA13 Duty of Candour (incorporating Engagement with those affected by a patient safety incident)
This policy applies to all clinical staff including permanent and temporary staff employed by the Trust. The policy also applies to students, bank and locum staff, contracted staff and volunteers. Every healthcare professional in the Trust must be open and honest with patients when care or treatment does not go as planned and which causes, or has the potential to cause, harm or distress. Engagement with those affected by a patient safety incident will be managed compassionately and on an individualised basis.

MMP23 Safe Use of Valproate
This procedure provides guidance to ensure that valpoate treatment is appropriately and safely used in accordance with regulatory requirements for all female children and women of childbearing potential and males under the age of 55 years. It advises health care professionals of the actions to be taken to educate patients on safe use of valproate and ensure awareness of the potential risk of birth defects and congenital malformations associated with taking valproate in pregnancy.
