Nurse Career Pathways

Our apprenticeships serve as the foundation for exciting and diverse career pathways within Mersey Care NHS Trust and beyond. Upon completion of the program, apprentices can pursue various opportunities, including:

Level 2: Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) - (12-18 months) (Band 2) 

  • This is your first step on the nursing pathway.
  • You'll gain practical experience supporting patients with everyday tasks, promoting well-being, and assisting qualified nurses.
  • Apprenticeship earns a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Level 3: Senior Healthcare Support Worker  - (18-24 months) (Band 3)

  • This advanced apprenticeship is designed for healthcare support workers who hold a level 2 Healthcare Support qualification
  • This is a great opportunity to further develop your skills and gain specialist knowledge in your specialist area. 
  • Gaining this Level 3 Qualification will be you first step to meeting the entry requirements to  Nurse Associate Level 5 Apprenticeship. 

Level 5: Student Nurse Associate (SNA) Apprenticeship (18-24 months) (Band 4)

  • Gain the knowledge and competence to provide more complex nursing care.
  • Deliver care under supervision, including medication management
  • The next career step between healthcare support workers and registered nurses
  • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Level 6: Registered Nurse (RN) Degree Apprenticeship (36-48 months) (Band 5)

  • This is where you become a fully qualified nurse! The apprenticeship combines work placement with academic study, leading to a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in nursing.
  • Registered nurses provide a broad range of care, including administering medication, monitoring patients' conditions, and educating them on self-care.
  • Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) 

Level 7: Enhanced/Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) - (Masters Degree - Variable)

  • Once you're a registered nurse, you can specialise further by undertaking a Master's degree apprenticeship in Advanced Clinical Practice 
  • ACPS are highly skilled nurses who work autonomously, leading teams, conducting complex assessments, and prescribing medications.
