This is an opportunity for existing support workers in Bands 2 or 3 Mental Health Support roles who do not currently hold a Level 3 qualification.

An exciting further education programme opportunity for the health care support workforce in Mental Health Care settings has been developed for Mersey Care. Working in partnership with The University of Central Lancashire (Uclan), we have created a fully online 24 week educational pathway for Mental Health Care Support Workers.

The aim of the module is to develop your knowledge and skills in the delivery of clinical support to people requiring therapy / treatment and services during their lifespan. Aligned with the Student Nurse Apprenticeship standards so may be considered as a gateway to progress onto these.

To apply for the Module, you and your supporting manager will need to complete an Authorising Manager Expression of Intrest (EOI) form, which can be found HERE.

The Expression of Intrest (EOI) form will be live until the 4th November 2024

This form needs to be completed by your line manager in conjunction with you the applying student.  Once submitted all  EOI will be reviewed by leads from the supporting Division. Upon approval, applicants will be moved to formal application with the University of Central Lancashire.

  1. Support is required from your service manager to attend this module.
  2. All Students require a named and identified Practice Coach.
  3. There will be 2 - 3 sessions that will be face-to-face on-site with MCFT.  These will be induction, midpoint assessment and closure of the module.
  4. Managers and or supervisors (aka Practice Coaches) are required to engage in supervision and support throughout the 24 weeks. This will involve periodic tripartite-style reviews
  5. Commitment is needed from management to protect time for study, the in-between session work and to submit the portfolio assignment.

A ‘clinical support worker’ (CSW) is anyone who supports a direct health or care intervention, but is not formally qualified, or registered by a professional body ( for e.g. Nursing & Midwifery Council, or HCPC) Clinical support workers fulfil a variety of clinical support roles, with a variety of job titles.

Some of these are universal roles such as healthcare assistant, whilst others have a more specialist focus such as Allied Health therapy assistant. They are patient facing staff (i.e. not administrative or clerical staff) who do not currently have an associated professional qualification.
