January's Employee of the Month winner is Aziz Amakrani from the First Response Hub. Jacqui was nominated by Denise Carey for the value of Respect.
During my matron shift, my duties included reviewing a service user on PICU who was in seclusion with the consultant on call. It was apparent that communication was challenging due to the service user first language being Kurdish and there being no interpreter available at point of review. The language barrier was making the service user more frustrated. Aziz attended the ward from his role in another team to assist the medic and myself with the review. His instant rapport with the service user enabled a full review to take place including the medic being able to review current symptoms and ensure all of the service users needs were met including his spiritual and dietary requirements.
Aziz's calm approach enabled the team help the service user - to understand their presenting problems and his traumatic past which contributed to him being in hospital. Aziz was able to assist the medic with the care plan following the interaction. The service user was very Thankful of Aziz intervention, shaking his hand.
January's Team of the Month winner is the Integrated Community Equipment Services (ICES). The team was nominated by Chloe Lee for the value of Accountability.
The team received a request for a bariatric bed at the end of their shift for a end of life patient. This request would normally have been completed by the staff on the late shift. However, due to the request and all staff being aware this was a child who was end of life all the staff quickly volunteered to deliver the bed.
The team were aware that this request was to ensure that the patient’s mother was able to sleep in bed with her daughter. All staff quickly and professional accommodated this request and worked together to ensure that the patients need was met.
Each and every member of the team do an amazing job and when they receive requests like this one it just shows how committed, responsive, and dedicated to their roles they really are.
The team had a conversation about what was required to meet the needs of the patient in terms of how many staff where required to meet the request. There were staff who were not involved in delivering and fitting the bed but supported the other staff in loading the bed onto the vehicle. This type of teamwork and dedication shows how accommodating, dependable, flexible, hard-working and ethical each and every member of the team are.
All the staff involved in ensuring that the patient is comfortable and other patients that that help to support will always just say 'but its our job' however although it is their job every day, they go out of their way to do their job and will always make sure that patients are happy with the service they receive. The team are often greeted with some very upsetting circumstances, and they always remain professional, compassionate, and empathetic. The way they handle these situations in itself has a positive impact on patients.
