As part of the construction process at our new build, contractors work with local community partners to deliver ‘social value’ to their construction project.

In July, Ewan Huizer (pictured) joined the project team at Mossley Hill for a few days of work experience. Many of you will know his mum Deana, the estates capital project manager on site.

Ewan’s duties included using robotic machines to accurately measure out mock-up rooms, transferring the data onto Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, and setting out gridlines on site.

Ewan said: “Overall, I have enjoyed my work experience here. I wish it lasted longer!.”

Henry Rodgers, Senior Engineer at the construction leads Graham and who was Ewan’s placement mentor, said: "It was an absolute pleasure to have Ewan with us this week. He’s a really nice and polite young lad, who represented himself really well. Ewan is welcome back with us any time. He will do well in whatever he decides to do after school, and we wish him all the very best.”

So far 9 apprentices have been supported by the builders over 183 apprentice weeks. 15 people have been supported on employability initiatives and the team have deliverted 3 education support activities so far, linking in with 118 students locally. The firm report nearly £11m of local spend in their supply chain.

On site, the construction firm are discussions with Merseyside Fire Service, offering them the use of the tower crane on the site for heights rescue training. The project tower crane provides a perfect opportunity to help local firefighters and technical rescue units practice their working from height rescues and to further develop their enhanced skills – offering 'real life' training facilities.
