On 11 September 2023, the Department of Health and Social Care was published the new cross-government and cross-sector National Suicide Prevention Strategy for England.

The strategy sets out the ambition for suicide prevention in England over the next five years and outlines over 100 initial actions that will be taken to reduce rates of suicide and self-harm, including through addressing key risk factors and supporting priority groups who are at higher risk of suicide. The important role of local government is highlighted throughout.

The government, including through the National Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group (which the LGA are part of), will continue to review progress and update actions throughout the lifetime of the strategy.
