LJMU welcome the opportunity for student nurses to learn more about the role of a research nurse. You have a skills set they could benefit from including:
· Managing a case load (time and priority management)
· Communication skills associated with informed consent, managing participants expectations of the trial
· Supporting those developing side effects of the treatment or those who deteriorate
· Managing and supporting those who may need to discontinue the trial or who decide to stop
· Supporting family members
· Working as part of a multidisciplinary team
· Discharging participants once the trail is complete
Student nurses often look for role models in practice and make decisions on career aspirations along the way. You could be a part of that and encourage others to think of research nursing as a way forward.
The NMC have discontinued the need for a mentorship qualification to assess students. You would only need some in house training to accept a student for a placement. Placements at LJMU are typically between 4-6 weeks long. This can be with a static team or a journey through a number of teams providing someone has oversight of the journey.
