We understand that staff have queries regarding tax codes and amount of tax paid in April’s pay. The payroll department applies tax codes based on instructions from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and are not privy to why individual tax codes have been issued. HMRC will not liaise with our payroll department about individual tax queries, they are only able to discuss them with individuals due to data protection.

If you have a query about your tax code, please access your personal tax account or contact HMRC. Your personal tax account can be accessed here: Personal tax account: sign in or set up - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). If you are not registered with this service, please follow the setup guidance to create an account. Alternatively, if you call HMRC on 0300 200 3300, an advisor will talk you through changes that have been made, and if a correction’s required, they will issue an amended tax code electronically to the payroll department within a few days of it being issued.

Flowers payment

Flowers payment is a corrective arrears payment for overtime pay and pay during periods of annual leave. The first corrective payment made for staff in September 2021, only covered the period up to March 2021. Colleagues who have previously received a Flowers payment in September 2021, may have received a further payment in this month’s pay. There may also be colleagues who have received a Flowers payment for the first time this month too. From 1 July 2021, ESR was updated to make sure the calculation for pay when on annual leave was built into the system. This resulted in a three month period (April to June 2021) not being covered in the original payments made.

Flowers payments received this month cover April 2021 to June 2021. The criteria for receiving the payment is:

  • Received a payment of additional basic pay (hours paid above your contracted hours) or overtime in April, May or June 2021
  • The payment is based on 16 percent of the gross value earned. If you did not receive additional basic pay or overtime in this period then you will not be entitled to a payment
  • This payment is not applicable to bank workers.
