To enhance your security and to protect patient data, NHS England will activate Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on NHS.net email accounts on 30 June 2024.

In preparation, all NHS.net email users, except those working in Secure Care*, must set up MFA on their account before 30 June 2024. This will enhance your security and will prevent any disruption to email access once MFA is activated on your account.

Set up MFA on your NHS.net email account

*Please note: Colleagues working in Secure Care should not set up MFA. Further guidance has been sent to these users.

What is MFA?

MFA protects you by asking you to prove (authenticate) who you are by providinga second form of identification (ID), in addition to your username and password. To do this, it is recommended that you use the Microsoft Authenticator app (pictured below) on your work or personal mobile device to generate a unique code that can be used to verify your identity.

You might already have the Microsoft Authenticator app on your personal phone for online services like banking, shopping, and social media.

If you don’t already have the Microsoft Authenticator app, you can install the app for free from the App Store or Google Play store.

Do you still need to use your NHS.net email account?

If you are only using your NHS.net email account as a secure method of sending emails, please be aware that your Mersey Care email account (yourname@merseycare.nhs.uk) is accredited to the same security standard (DCB1596) as the NHSmail (NHS.net) service. This means that you no longer need to use your NHS.net email account to send secure emails, as this can be done from your Mersey Care email account.

For guidance on how to send emails securely from your Mersey Care email account, please read the secure email guidance on YourSpace
