December's Employee of the Month winner is Kate Sanders from the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT). Kate was nominated by Dominnie Southon for the value of Support.

Kate went above and beyond in her role as a community mental health nurse whilst working with CRHT.

Kate provided support to a service user, which resulted with Kate saving the service users life. Kate's quick thinking and enthusiasm meant that she was able to remove a ligature from a service user whilst awaiting support form emergency services. Kate was in an extremely difficult situation and ensured that she provided the upmost level of support, demonstrating excellent patient care during a stressful situation. Kate was on a visit in the community alone.

Saved service users life, without Kate's intervention service user may well have completed suicide as the service user was unable to remove a ligature that she has placed around her own neck.

Kate ensured the service users safety and ensured an appropriate handover to emergency services once they arrived on scene.

Service user subsequently was taken to her local A&E to be physically checked over.

Without Kate's quick thinking and enthusiasm this incident could have had a very different outcome.

Thank you, Kate!

December's Team of the Month winner is the Astley Ward. The team was nominated by Amy Shaw for the value of Support.

Astley ward staff, prepared with the multi disciplinary team for four months to help support a patient with complex learning disabilities and autism to attend his sister’s wedding in person at Manchester.  Four staff were needed for the leave. In depth care planning and risk management was put in place, his family was made up! All staff went in suits and blended in as wedding guests and were allocated a wedding table. He stayed for the three course meal and for five hours. He went to the bar and purchased his own alcohol free drink, he used his own money and he also bought family and friends a drink which he was made up with. On his way home, while eating a box of after eights, he thanked the staff. Staff supported him from start to finish in a person centred compassionate way from dressing him, to helping him navigate around family and friends during the wedding. It’s difficult to describe, but the family, particularly mum, was over the moon with the amount of effort and support the team displayed.

The patient has not been to a gathering like this in several years. He is very close to family; this will boost his confidence and relationship with the team and give him motivation through his pathway. He was supported to be as independent as possible and to engage with people he has not seen for a long time. This is outstanding work from the team and the patient who has required a lot of support within services. A year ago, this patient would not be able to leave the hospital due to levels of aggression and distress. The way the team have worked with him to rebuild his confidence to get to this point is remarkable!
