There are a number of clinical skills courses available at Liverpool John Moore's University, they are:
- Venepuncture (3 hours in duration)
- Cannulation (3 hours in duration)
- Care of a Nasogastric (NG) tube, Blood Glucose and Epipen training (4 hours in duration)
The courses are to be accessed by staff that undertake the above clinical skills and work in an area likely to involve the care for those that use Nasogastric (NG) tubes, or care for those with NG tubes.
Courses are able to be booked on individually.

Venepuncture and Cannulation (3 hours in duration)
Venepuncture (Phlebotomy) and Cannulation are the most commonly performed invasive procedures in the NHS. To perform these procedures well and to a safe standard it requires staff to have relevant and up-to-date knowledge and skills.
This training includes both comprehensive theory and interactive practical on state of the art latex arms, with plenty of time to perfect your technique!
Learning outcomes
- To gain a basic understanding of the vascular system.
- To gain an underpinning knowledge to enable performance of venepuncture/cannulation safely and competently.
- Understand the legal and professional issues related to venepuncture/peripheral cannulation.
Care of a Nasogastric (NG) tube, Blood Glucose Monitoring Training and Epipen training (4 hours in duration)
NG training will promote a clear, consistent and evidence based approach to the care and management of nasogastric (NG) and tubes. The course will promote the safety and well-being of all patients who require a nasogastric tubes, providing guidance regarding scope of professional practice, level of competence and accountability in nasogastric, care and management.
Blood Glucose Monitoring training is aimed at those working with or responsible for testing blood glucose levels and monitoring the wellbeing of people with low (hypoglycaemia) and high (hyperglycaemia) blood glucose levels.
On completion of this training course participants will be able to identify the signs of irregular blood glucose levels, test patient’s levels of blood glucose and how to manage it effectively
Epipen training is suitable for any person who is involved in the administration of adrenaline pens and needs to be aware of the diagnosis and treatment of anaphylactic allergic reactions. Anaphylaxis is an extreme and severe allergic reaction. The whole body is affected, often within minutes of exposure to the allergen but sometimes after hours

- Will be able indicate the potential need for nasogastric tube insertion.
- Discuss and understand the theory and procedure related to assessing position/placement.
- Explore the differences in fine bore and wide bore NG tubes.
- Understand and demonstrate the appropriate nursing assessment and safe naso- gastric insertion.
- Understand the safety measurements and trust guidelines required.
Blood glucose Monitoring
- Define and recognise high, low and target blood glucose levels.
- Describe the benefits of blood glucose monitoring.
- Explore different methods of monitoring blood glucose.
- Practical guidance on monitoring blood glucose levels.
- Describe the key factors affecting blood glucose levels and how to manage effectively.
