Being a vice chair of a staff network comes with numerous benefits that can enhance both personal and professional development. Here are some key advantages our Chair, Lee Gough thinks are beneficial:
1. Leadership development
As a vice chair, individuals could develop and refine their leadership skills. This role often involves collaborating with the chair to facilitate meetings, organise events, and guide discussions. Such experiences can help build confidence in public speaking, decision making, and strategic planning.
2. Networking opportunities
The position provides access to a diverse group of individuals within the organisation. By working closely with other network members, including senior leaders and peers from various departments, vice chairs can expand their professional network significantly. This networking can lead to mentorship opportunities and collaborations on projects.
3. Influence and impact
Vice chairs play an essential role in shaping the direction of the staff network. They contribute to discussions about policies, initiatives, and events that promote diversity, equality, and inclusion within the organisation. This influence allows them to advocate for changes that benefit all employees and create a more inclusive workplace.
4. Skill enhancement
The responsibilities associated with being a vice chair often require individuals to engage in tasks such as event planning, budget management, and communication strategies. These activities help enhance various skills that are transferable to other roles within the organisation or future career opportunities.
5. Visibility within the organisation
Serving as a vice chair increases visibility among colleagues and leadership. It demonstrates commitment to organisational values related to diversity and inclusion while showcasing one’s ability to take on additional responsibilities beyond typical job functions.
6. Contribution to organisational culture
Vice chairs contribute significantly to fostering an inclusive organisational culture by promoting awareness of different perspectives and experiences through network activities. Their involvement helps create an environment where all employees feel valued and heard.
7. Succession planning experience
Being in this role prepares individuals for future leadership positions within the organisation by providing firsthand experience in governance structures, strategic planning processes, and member engagement strategies.
