Dying Matters Awareness Week is run by Hospice UK and aims to work with people and communities to create an open culture in which we’re comfortable talking about death, dying and grief.
As part of the week’s activities, Mersey Care’s Advance Care Planning Team has been working closely with a group of volunteers and clergy. Supported by the Engagement Team, the group closely reviewed the information regarding Palliative Care available on the Trust’s website. After some discussion and debate their comments and suggestions were shared with Corinna Hurst from the Advance Care Planning Team for consideration. Corinna was very happy to take on the vast majority of recommendations and the web page has now been changed to incorporate these.
Speaking about the engagement process, and the difference the volunteers have made, Corinna said “Palliative and End of Life Care is very personal to each individual and can be emotive. Talking about it and recording our wishes and preferences is so helpful to everyone involved not least our patients. Although it is an emotive subject, sharing our advance care plans about what we want in the future is vital in ensuring our wishes are followed. The information that our volunteers thought was most helpful and easy to understand has been included on our internet page and it is hoped this will provide support and reassurance to any of our patients looking to Mersey Care for advice and support. The help of our volunteers on this project has been vital and Mersey Care appreciate all their effort and would like to thank each of them for their continued enthusiasm and guidance to our NHS Trust”
