Data Essentials

Applications are now open for June 2024. This apprenticeship equips individuals with essential data analysis skills to contribute effectively to the trust's goals of delivering high-quality patient care and operational excellence.

Course start: Typically June, September and Januaury

Duration: 14 months (+3 months for End-Point Assessment)

Qualification: Level 3 Apprenticeship Data Essentials.

High level summary of study commitment.

  • Minimum of six hours per week of study time consisting of lectures and online delivery 
  • Group coaching and subject specialist sessions / workshops 
  • Independent Study allocated every week for the duration of the course.

Applicants should be aware that in addition to the study time allocated, there will be an expectation of additional study hours being undertaken in their own time.

The apprenticeship is suitable for staff working in a role where data is used on a regular basis and are wanting to build confidence and technical skills to work with data effectively, and those who wish to progress into more data driven roles.

Embedded within the apprenticeship you will also have access to the NHS Edward Jenner leadership programme, which will support you as you develop essential leadership skills.

  • Eligibility: Relevant job roles to the subject matter such as Administration, Data Assistant, Patient and Staff Experience support, Healthcare support worker, Business Support, Information Support/Governance, Team Leader/Supervisor etc

What will the course cover?

Module 1 – 12 weeks duration

  • Data types and format, architecture and platforms, data in a digital world, accessing and extracting data, sourcing data, migrating data and the mportance of data formats.

Module 2 – 12 weeks duration

Importance of data formats, collate, format and save data, data management, presentation tools, communication tools, collaborative working techniques, effective filtering, blending data, data manipulation, identifying trends.

Module 3 - 12 weeks duration

Improving data quality, data quality issues, obsolete data, importance of data accuracy, legal and regulatory requirements, data sharing, ethical use of data, compliance issues, data security, data protection, validating data, data interpretation.

Module 4 - 12 weeks duration

Statistics for decision making – emerging technologies, evidence based decision making, business value and brand awareness, cultural awareness and diversity, data accessibility, developing for different audiences, algorithms, statistic methods, data modelling, normalising data.

Module 5 - 12 weeks duration

Storytelling and visualisation - Communication methods, range of roles in an organisation, value of data to business, creating a narrative, communicating meaning, technical documentation.

Module 6 - six weeks duration

From data citizen to data specialist – the future of data, learning techniques, learning tools, personal development.

Additional module Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate

This module includes an exam that measures competency in the fundamentals of creating and managing worksheets and workbooks, creating cells and ranges, creating tables, applying formulas and functions, creating charts and objects. It also covers the ability to create and edit workbooks with multiple sheets and use graphic elements to represent data visually

  • The apprenticeship program offers a comprehensive curriculum focusing on data essentials, including data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Apprentices learn to utilize various data analysis tools and techniques tailored to the healthcare sector, enabling them to extract actionable insights from complex data sets.
  • Through practical training and real-world scenarios, you will gain hands-on experience in applying data analysis principles to address challenges and optimize processes within Mersey Care Trust.
  • Through data analysis skills, you can contribute to enhancing the quality, safety, and effectiveness of healthcare services, ultimately improving patient experiences and outcomes.

The program prepares apprentices for diverse career pathways within Mersey Care Trust, including roles in data management, healthcare analytics, quality improvement, and decision support.

The L3 Data Essentials with Microsoft Excel Certification is suitable for staff wanting to build confidence and technical skills to work with data effectively and those who want to progress into more data driven roles. Embedded within the apprenticeship you will also have access to the NHS Edward Jenner leadership programme, which will support you as you develop essential leadership skills.

The Microsoft Teams session is designed to answer any questions you may have about the Data Essentials Apprenticeship in an informal online setting.

3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subjects

GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above)

Functional skills are an important part of all apprenticeships and apprentices who don't already have maths and English at level 2 or above will undertake functional skill qualifications in these areas.

Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same subject or higher level qualification in a similar subject 

To apply for the apprenticeship, you will first need to complete a Levy application form, which can be found HERE. 

Applications are now being accepted for Data Essentials with a start date in April 2024

This form needs to be completed your line manager in conjunction with you the applying apprentice.  Once completed all funding application will be reviewed by the Work Force Development Education and Training  Group. Upon approval applicants will be moved to formal application with apprenticeship provider
