There will be new bar coded labels for bloods from today, 1 February 2024.

Labels will include additional information on the sample label printed from ICE and a bar code. These changes will support an increase in patient safety and allow the labs to handle samples more efficiently and increase speed of results.

The new bar coded labels will inclube the type of colour tube to use, it is essential that the correct label is used with the correct tube. The labels need to be straight and smooth running down the tube. Spare labels are not available, if it is damaged you will need to print a new one. Before putting a new label on, make sure it is clear, for example check the ink isn't fainted or blurred.

Note: labels that don't have bar codes on can still be used.

The impact of the change will be monitored and feedback will be provided after a few months.

If the barcode or text is not printing within the designated label on the ICE request form, please contact paperfree@imerseyside.nhs.uk  to report this. For any other issues with ICE and/or printing, these incidents should be logged with your IT Service Desk as normal.
