Yesterday CQC inspectors continued their inspections of our secure and learning disability services by visiting Rowan View Hospital and Marlowe and Byron Wards at Hollins Park Hospital. An interview also took place with the Trust’s Guardian of Safe Working Hours, after which they requested a focus group to take place with junior doctors. Three focus groups also took place at V7 for Secure Care Division, Mental Health Care Division and Community Care Division.

An inspector also turned up unannounced at the Mental Health Act Law Governance Group and was impressed with the meeting, the Trust’s transparent approach and noted we were on track with everything.

CQC gave no feedback from their inspection of Rowan View as they plan to return today and possibly tomorrow to continue their inspection. They attended and observed a multidisciplinary team meeting on Marbury Ward. Inspectors asked about how many staff usually run a ward, how we coped with any shortfalls and what was the impact on patient activity, patient experience and Section 17 leave - they also asked about getting patients out of seclusion.

The inspectors also looked at reducing restrictive practice and evidence, how it’s reviewed and blanket restrictions. They were interested in our trauma informed care approach and staff understanding of it with patients. They also asked about restraint and seclusion, how people are trained in restraint and the effect on patients.

Among other things, the inspectors were interested in staff morale, the support from managers, and spoke to a preceptor about how they felt starting at the Trust. Similar themes emerged during their inspections at Hollins Park and overall staff felt confident and thought the inspectors were positive about their visits and did not want to escalate anything. Byron ward visit was not completed so they will return today, and they are also planning to visit Wavertree bungalow to observe staff training. They will be attending our People Committee today too.
