This procedure describes the systems and processes in place throughout Mid Mersey Division, to provide safe and effective care during a clinical emergency situation or resuscitation event. This procedure applies to all staff based within the Mid Mersey Division (this will include Marlowe, Tennyson and Chesterton units based at Hollins Park and Litherland Walk in-Centre due to the locality of these services and the resuscitation equipment they currently use) and provides direction for staff regarding their roles, responsibilities and actions in order to provide care and summon assistance in clinical emergency situations.

This policy aims to ensure that service user's safety is the primary objective of all Trust rosters. All rosters have to ensure that the staffing level and skill mix required for the safe and appropriate care of service users is available at all times; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The roster must ensure a fair and equitable distribution of shifts to all colleagues.

Evidence from the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide yearly reports suggest that any patient who is discharged from a mental health inpatient environment are at their highest risk of relapse or harm within the first 72 hours. This Standard Operating Procedure will outline the expected practice standard for each clinician who is involved with the discharge of a patient from a mental health inpatient unit and those who will be completing the 72 hour follow up within the community.
